Triple Whistles

For something fun, just two examples of triple whistles:

Play A: I can see the TW. Play B: T has a whistle only because T is sort of the new C.

Interesting plays to break down... I'll bite...

It should be noted that both these examples are from contests played under FIBA rules and while very close to NCAA/NBA mechanics there are some slight differences that may make a person scratch their head...

Play #1

3 seconds on video - L has nothing to referee in his PCA, C has an open look at the ball handler and the defender, T has matchups to be aware of in his PCA.

4 second mark - White player beats the Red defender to the offences right going away from the C which now straight lines the center (center-defence-offence). Trail, IMO, is too deep as this play develops and is straight lined with the help side defender. Lead still has nothing to referee in his PCA and because of his body position on the endline actually has the best open look at the illegal contact on the dribbler even though the contact is at the free throw line.

Listen to the cadence of the whistles and watch the movement of each official as the play is stopped for the foul. It is virtually simultaneous. No patience from this crew.

IMHO – Lead should have 1st crack at this call by virtue of his open look and lack of anything else to officiate at the time. Trail would be guessing but should if needed get this call second. Center needs to stay off this play as his positioning does not enable him to actually see the Illegal contact and he is definitely guessing.

In FIBA mechanics when you any double (or triple in this case) whistle with the Lead; the Lead takes the call which is done in this example.

Play #2 – It should be noted under FIBA 3-person mechanics, the Lead is permitted to referee the action while positioned directly under the basket (read in the paint). This could appear to North American officials that a rotation has been started. (comment: I don’t like it and we, north of the 49th, are advised not to position ourselves there)

14 sec – C & L both have open looks at the entry pass to the post. Trail should be looking at the help side defender and that match up on the low block on his side of the floor.

16 sec – by virtue of positioning the L becomes straight lined (Lead-Defence-Offence). Trail is straight lined with the players at the elbow. C, IMO, has the best open look as the try for goal starts. As the play moves on, the red ball handler turns back to their left which puts L & C in position for an open look. Where the defender ends up it automatically straight lines the T.

The gold defender jumps in an attempt to block the try for goal and creates Illegal contact. IMO the Trail is still straight lined and L & C have good open looks at the Illegal contact.

As with play #1 - Listen to the cadence of the whistles and watch the movement of each official as the play is stopped for the foul. It is virtually simultaneous. No patience from this crew.

Trail definitely needs to stay off this play and this is an OK double whistle by L&C.

My 2 cents
