Uh oh, actually a relevant and funny joke by BM.

I would like to apologize to nevadaref and everyone else for lashing out on yesterday, I was having a bad day so my emotions may have gotten the best of me. I know this site will be instrumental in my development as an official so I will continue to come here to learn.

Thanks for posting this.

I think that the "old guard" was too standoffish, but I see their point -- it's a slippery slope once you start putting your arm around a coach or acting buddy-buddy with some of the players. Even at the HS level, I'm certain to sped exactly the same amount of time before the game with each coach, even if I do know one coach extremely well (to the point where I've had beers in the off-season with that coach). On the floor, perception is everything.

I want no parts of friendly advice from you sir.

RhodyRef:

I am an IAABO Official just like you. Since you don't want Nevada's advice, then take mine. Nevada was correct in correcting you. We are the professionals and experts; using correct terminalogy is what separates us from the "fanboys" and "howler monkeys" and all of the other riff-raff out there.

A good example is a defender "obtains" a LGP in NCAA and FIBA Rules, while in NFHS the defender "establishes" a LGP (even though it was "obtain" in NFHS until about 20 years ago and it was a personal friend and a NFHS Committee Member who pushed for the word be changed from "establish" to "obtain" in both the NCAA and NFHS Rules, but that is another story).

Use correct terminalogy and you significantly reduce the chance of your words coming back to haunt you.

To me, the difference between "obtain" and "establish" is the same difference between endline vs. baseline.

APG:

I agree with you, but Ed Ferrigno thought that the word "obtain" was a better word than "establish" and was able to convince the NFHS Rules Committee but was never able to convince the NCAA Rules Committee. When discussing NFHS Rules with H.S. officials I still find myself using the word "establish" instead of "obtain".
