I believe the advice you're getting --- give up the rec crap --- is good advice. It's not a local problem - everywhere I've worked, in multiple sports, rec leagues are the worst - from kids to parents to board members and coaches.

Put me on the list of those which have given up rec games. I gave them up about 8 years ago and gave up the summer ball that we call AAU (but isn't) around here about 4 years ago. It has reduced my schedule to about 50 games a year but my season is much better now.
My suggestion, give up rec ball. |

I guess I am alone in saying I officiate rec leagues in the off season. I find something to work on and I work the games. I understand the opinion to not do them, but I can still find something to enjoy in them. I also take the opportunity to work on conflict resolution and communication. If that doesn't work, the cops could be called.
As far as the comments the OP made - it is a human response. We are at our best when we understand the game on a different level than someone who wants their team to win.
