UNC/Florida State

I'm sure some of you by now have heard about Roy Williams pulling (most of) his players off the floor with about 15 seconds left to play against Florida State in anticipation of the crowd storming the court.

Apparently Williams now says he didn't realize his five scrubs were still out on the court and he thought FSU coach Leonard Hamilton had agreed to call the game early.

Quote:
According to Kirschner, Williams asked Hamilton if he would be offended if the game could be declared over with 14 seconds to play. Williams, according to Kirschner, believed that Hamilton had agreed to end the game early.
Is there anything in NCAA rules that allows the two coaches to decide to end the game early?

I understand it was Florida State's idea to get UNC off the floor. Don't know if anything like that had ever happened before.

Not according to UNC's official story. They're saying Williams approached Hamilton and asked if he was okay calling the game.

Well in the press conference the Hamilton said he went to Williams about getting them off the court.

Peace

Why would Hamilton lie?

Seriously though, what's the protocol in this situation if you're an official? Just shrug your shoulders, not cause an additional scene? What in the rule book allows a team and coach to just walk off the court without declaring a forfeit?

Not sure there is any. And why would you care if the issue is safety. And why would you declare a forfeit, the game was a blowout in FSU's favor. Not sure you need to do anything but let it happen.

Peace

Not sure what the policy is but how come the report doesn't include the coaches having a discussion with the officials? Were Williams and Hamilton going to bilaterally end the game without any involvement of the game officials?

It appears Roy Williams apologized for leaving his walk-ons on the floor before this game was over.

Roy Williams apologizes

Peace

Had all 5 UNC players left the floor, all FSU had to do was hold the ball or dribble out the last 14 seconds. Not a big deal.

By the rules, only for "non varsity" games.

As a practical matter, if it's a "forfeit" the score and all stats stand (because 30 minutes had been played) and it doesn't need an asterisk because the non-forfeiting team was ahead.
