Foul disparity

Yup, I got to hear it tonight. 14-2 (yes, you are reading that right). The 14th was an ABS technical on the head coach who complained a bit too much and finished up with "You guys are missing a good game."

(The only response would've been, "I'm sure I am, but I'm here tonight" so I just served a spot of tea instead.)

The visiting team's players simply played super-aggressive and didn't adjust a lick the entire first half.

I'd give my game check back if only I could have a close, cleanly played game.

Did one team play zone and the other play man? Or did one team shoot outside shots and the other attacked the basket?

Peace

The team with 2 fouls sagged back in a zone and were winning pretty convincingly throughout. The other team tried to play football.

I lost count of how many fouls I called 80 feet from the basket. A girl would clear the rebound and a defender would dive right in to try to rip the ball out. Foul after foul after foul....and no adjustments.

Sometimes it just is what it is.

FWIW I've noticed that the ability of a team to adjust to the game situation appears to be directly related to how well they are coached. If the head coach had spent more time coaching their players and less whining at the officials it probably would have been a lot better game.

5 to 1

I my game tonight the coach said, "5 to 1? What's going on?" in regards to the foul count while I was discussing something with the book.

As a first year guy, I had been looking forward to giving a clean response in this type of situation: "Coach, you're pressing and playing man to man while they sit in a zone." Walked away.

The little victories in life.

He knew better. His team was lucky they didn't have more fouls they way they were playing.

I really love this phrase. I'm going to steal it.

Do you know what it is called when officials worry about the foul count or make calls based on the foul count?

Do you know what a coach is saying when they question foul counts?

As a first year guy, I had been looking forward to giving a clean response in this type of situation:

I heard a very good official once say in this situation: "Nobody knows it better than we do, Coach." I like that, because it says you're aware of it and if you could grab one, you would.

I've also worked with a very good (D1 and above) official who told a coach, "Don't tell me about the numbers, Coach," and then T'd the assistant later in the game for mentioning the foul count.

So there's definitely more than one way to handle it. It just depends on how you like to deal with coaches. I personally prefer the first comment, and have used it quite often with good results.

I don't count 'em coach. I just call them.

My old mentor O.T had a great line--"I just call them, I don't count them."

"Well, stop fouling."
