Talking This was way too easy

Worked a MS girls tournament at a local HS yesterday. Coach A was jabbering a bit but nothing harsh. But in the middle of Q3, he got upset with a no call by my partner on a layup by one of his girls. He jumped up and down, threw his hands up and yelled "If that's not a foul, then I don't know what is!" I turned to him and said, "You're absolutely right, coach". He said, "I am?" I replied, "Yes, you don't know what is." He just stared and then sat down and remained relatively silent the rest of the game.

Man, that was one of the easiest ones yet. BTW - his team lost by over 40. I'm sure it was because of the no-calls.

I wish coaches would set themselves up for something like that more often. Great response.

That sort of response would get me dropped to games where all the coaches have a kid on the team.

A simple T would have been my response.

True, but not nearly as funny.

I agree though responses like that are rarely appropriate.

Mark gets away with stuff others of us wouldn't dream of trying or saying.

I ref several rec league here in the NVA area and have a great relationship with many of the parents and coaches as I've reffed their kids for many yrs. Every now and then I'll attempt at something funny or clever, as I too have a pretty good sense of humor. Yet, I still wouldn't try some of the lines I read on the forum......just me.

In scholastics games, I don't even try. That's more business.

He's on the board of directors of the league.

It's something I would only pull out at games like Mark works. And I don't work games like that.

I enjoy the stories, though. If I did this in a HS game it wouldn't affect my schedule, but I'd be really disappointed in myself for running my mouth when I should know better.

Hey - another thumbs down to a post of mine and you can't use one of my lines in your signature anymore!

Fair enough. Can I still use it on the court?

+1

Whether these lines are appropriate always come down to your relationship with the recipient of said lines. There's zero chance I'd use them, but I appreciate where they can be used.

Agreed

My nature is to be a smarty pants which I realize is wrong. Want to do funny, open at the comedy womb in your hometown.

I rarely say anything to a high school coach, smart azz or otherwise.

Had some kids tournament over weekend and game before us set officiating back 50 years...just brutal, girls were getting chop blocked with no calls. As temperature was rising in gym, during a timeout, refs were chuckling. Did not look good. Disgusting.

One of these days I'm actually going to do that just to see what you'd actually be able to do with the information.
