The Sox just gave up a 3-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to blow what had been a 4-0 lead against. . . the freakin' Devil Rays!!!!! Where's my hug? :(

Misery loves company.

"DETROIT — Dustan Mohr used to hate Comerica Park. Now, he loves it. Mohr hit a two-run homer over the ballpark's shortened left-field fence as the Minnesota Twins and Brad Radke shut down the Tigers 3-1 Monday in Alan Trammell's debut as Detroit's manager."

Hey, but at least the Royals won. Probably the first time they have been above five hundred since '85.

Derek Jeeter dislocated his shoulder tonight. Chance he'll
be gone for the season, depending on what the tests show.

Anybody got a shortstop they ain't using? Prefer World Series experience but willing to train on the job.

BTW, is it right to be playing baseball March 31???? I mean, really...

Gonna be a long season for BOSOX fans! :p

Chuck, maybe you should tryout for the bullpen. They need a closer real, real bad!! ;)

Probably won't affect his drinking arm, though.

Of course, living in Portland like I do, I shouldn't throw stones. Damon Stoudamire and Rasheed Wallace received their sentences today for having pot in their car and rookie Qyntel Woods was reported on the local news as having been arrested this weekend for possession.

The beat goes on. We are so proud of our Blazers. :p

Hey, I'm no Blazers fan, but ya gotta admit, at least Rasheed hasn't been ejected for a while. And even without Pippen, they're winning! They are still about eight games ahead of the Lakers. I think Cheeks may be onto something.

They are very young, and obviously re-building in the purest sense of the word, but bench Boss Gibson and Manager Trammell will teach and demand that the basics are employed.

They do now! Did you see Trammell's face after the second of those plays? I don't think you want your first team meeting to be a closed-door tirade, but I'm quite certain that we won't see a batter taking it easy out of the batter's box anymore in Detroit.

The media fawns over Jeter so much that they'll probably give him the AL MVP award for his "clubhouse leadership" after Steinbrenner buys Tejada for this season and they win the AL East again.

Here's a discussion topic: Derek Jeter, most overrated player ever? He's not even one of the five best shortstops in the American League.

Well, I dunno about that, but he's certainly one of the best SS's currently playing for the Yankees, if you ignore Soriano, who's fitting in at 2nd pretty nicely. Anyway, being a coach I'm sure you undersand the concept of the team leader, and Jeter fills that role quite well.

Major League Baseball is the place that a good leader is least necessary. It barely qualifies as a team sport. I love baseball, but it's not much more of a team sport than the Ryder Cup.

Come on....it was the Mets!! I really do like Sosa. I was hoping he would go to the Yankees last year.

ChuckElias Wed Apr 02, 2003 08:56am

I've said this before, but I hate the Jim Rome show. However, it's on in my area when I'm often in my car, and when there's nothing else on the radio, I'll flip over to hear if there's a decent interview.

Anyway, yesterday Skip Bayless was filling in for Rome and said that Sosa is "the biggest phoney in baseball". Does anybody know what the basis for such a claim might be? That's literally the first time I've ever heard anybody say anything negative about him (except for whispered questions about steroid use). Any ideas?

I also heard that C-U-B-S stands for Completely Useless By September :D

I don't know if this is what he meant, but someone in one of the Chicago papers had (something like) this prediction for the season:

Sosa hits 55 homers. 50 are with no one on base or with the Cubs behind by 8 runs in the 8th inning.

IOW, he doesn't get the big hit.

There are also rumors about his presence in the clubhouse causing some unrest -- he likes to play his loud, Latin music and doesn't (seem to) care how that affects his teammates.

Plus, it was "big news" that he showed up on-tiome for spring training this year -- he typically reports at the very last minute.

Now that it really IS September. . .

I was going thru old threads, saw this one, and thought I'd bump it up. Just thought it'd be funny to look back at our first impressions of the season.

Cubs are definitely not useless -- yet. And the Sox got that closer, the Yanks' closer is human after all, and we got us a genuINE "big series" this weekend in the Bronx.

Royals still got a chance. It's gonna be a fun September.

Could be worse guys - you could be a Mariner fan like me and watch your team slide from a 5 game lead to a half-game BEHIND BOSTON fer God's sake...only way we beat the Orioles last night was Boone taking one in the back to force home the winning run - that's after being shut-out TWICE by Tampa Bay...sigh...maybe I should become a BoSox fan too!

ChuckElias Sat Sep 06, 2003 11:21am

Last weekend, I went away for the holiday and wasn't able to follow the races too closely. M's were up by 2 games in the West when I left. When I got home on Monday, I did a double take when somebody on TV said that they were tied with the Sox for the wild card! But you've got some time to make it back up. I think the M's and A's play a few more times in Sept. After Sunday, the Sox and Yanks are done (for the regular season).

The Buffalo Bills never won the big one. The Braves did win a World Series in 95. Granted it was only one, but that is more that Buffalo can say.

We should be taking the pennant when the season wraps up, but if things don't go our way, we can still win the series (the only one that really matters).

Actually, he threw the ball either into the dugout or at the third base umpire. . .and then went home. I think he was ejected even before the last runner crossed home plate on the play. He was pissed, as I'm sure you know, b/c he felt the ball was foul and the 3rd base ump ruled it fair, and 3 runs scored.

That same ump drew the ire of the Baltimore coaching staff earlier in the game when they thought that Nomar's errant throw to third had gone out of play. The ump ruled that it had stayed on the playing field. That meant that the runner on third was not awarded home and he ended up being stranded there.

Unbelievably, the TV audience wasn't given a decent replay of either controversial call.

So the 3rd base ump "cost" the Sox 3 runs and "cost" the O's one run. Right after the second call (going against the Sox), my wife said, "Do you think he did that to make up for the other one?"

Interestingly, just last week during the Cubbies/Cards 5-game series (I think it was the second game of their doubleheader), there was a fair/foul call that unfolded just the opposite way. Ball was hit down the 3rd base line, chalk flew, and the ump called it foul. I think two guys from the Cards bullpen got tossed.

I love baseball. :)

Now that it is September 24th, I think Manny and Pedro are making plans to travel to Oakland, then New York, then Chicago :D

I'm sure he'll be able to get good tickets for himself

As happy as I am that they made it in, it was very silly to see them out on the field celebrating and holding up the #1 signal. Number 1? Maybe they forgot that they didn't win the division.

And that's essentially why I don't really like the wild card in the first place (no pun intended). It used to be that in order to make the post-season, you actually had to win something; either your league or your division. Even tho it has been good for the Sox (who have been the AL wild card team three times since its inception in '95), the wild card has removed the one thing that had differentiated it from the post-seasons of the other major sports -- the necessity of winning your division to advance.

Just my own opinion, of course.

Yeah ,but the fact is the BoSox are in and my Mariners aren't...that sucks...but at least the Mariners have good "field Presence" - that counts for something, doesn't it???

With Pedro going tonight?!?!? Are you kidding? He's healthier than he's been in 2 years. He's pitching better than he has all season! Could he lose? Of course. But could anybody really be nervous about our chances tonight? No way!

We still have a way to go before we catch the movie quote thread on the "General" forum. But I'm up for the challenge if you are. :)

Of course. A true Sox fan doesn't even consider getting nervous until they're up by 3 going into the 8th in the final game...

That's when you guys get some serious jitters going on.

Having once had the opportunity to stand on the exact spot where the ball "gets by Buckner" (ohhh...I can *still* hear him saying that!) I will forever be nervous!

Uh oh!

Tie it up with 2 out in the 9th. Win it with 2 out in the 12th-with the slowest catcher in the League beating out a bunt.

Hmmmmm-almost like they're cursed,isn't it?

Bosox down 2-0. Me thinks the fat lady may be warming up the vocal chords. :D

ChuckElias Sat Oct 04, 2003 10:06am

Wow, not a good start. :( I was in Boston on Thrs and Fri. I was in Quincy market when Wakefield gave up the 3 runs in the first. I didn't understand taking Kim out with 2 outs in the 9th. Yeah, nobody has 100% confidence in him, but didn't we already try the "committee" experiment? And Wake is either good or real bad. And the knuckler just wasn't good in his start.

I don't think we're getting swept, tho. Back in Boston. Lowe is great at home and Lilly has never beaten the Sox in Boston. We should get this one. If we can get it back to Oakland, then we throw Pedro. . . You never know.

ChuckElias Sun Oct 05, 2003 10:38am

Didn't go as planned, but we're still alive!

Seems to me the Sox loaded the gun, handed it to the A's, painted a big fat red bullseye on their chest and made their peace.

No way the A's should have lost that game, final should have been 2-0. Gonna be hard for me to keep rooting for those losers now...

Just the way I expected it to happen :D The nice thing is that the winning rally in the 8th came from Nomar, Manny, and Ortiz; all of whom have struggled to this point. Maybe a good omen for tomorrow!

ChuckElias Sun Oct 05, 2003 06:55pm

Congrats to Dan and JR. Is another Sox/Yanks ALCS in the works? Got my fingers crossed.

dblref Sun Oct 05, 2003 07:20pm

I'll tell you one thing Chuck, you guys have a lot of resileince (sp?). The best thing going for you now is the fact that Oakland has lost something like 5 times when it goes to 5 games.

Good day today -- the Cowboys won, the Yankees won, and the Redskins lost. :D
