Having grown up in Alaska in an avid hunting family, I must admit that I have seen moose nards up close, and I can tell you right now I would NEVER wear them around my neck!! Whether they would fit through the little loop on the jersey is irrelevant!!

I hear people say that. I've never broken one.

Before I started reffing, I assumed it was anything made out of "gimp", made at camp,for clippinnng things onto.

To my knowledge there are three types of lanyard one can wear.

1) The old time loose neck lanyard that all of us old geezers use to wear before the invention of the Smitty.

2) The Smitty.

3) The non-loose neck (the type we see in the NBA/WNBA) or noose neck type lanyard.

Personally, I prefer the Smitty. But I have all three types of lanyard in my bag. During "real" games I wear either the Smitty or the noose neck lanyard. But when I wear the old shirts with collars (for summer and recreational league games), I sometimes wear the loose neck lanyard.

In the final analysis, who cares what type of laynard one wears. All three look fine to me. It is an official's personal preference as to the type of lanyard he/she prefers to wear. When I evaluate an official the only thing I want to see is that he is wearing a lanyard (I do not care wether it is Type 1, 2, or 3) and that it is black. What really steams my tuchus is an official who does not use a laynard.

No...but the tuchus is awful close to the nards on a moose.

Just out of curiosity, why? The only purpose of the lanyard is to make things easier on the official. If he can officiate a good game and hold onto his whistle, what's the problem?

No, they're not. "They" make Smittys and noose lanyards with the microphone clips for Precision Timing.


Also, mick, the antennae for PT are in the belt packs.

I have used both the smitty and noose style lanyards. I personally like the smitty because of the fact that it does not wrap tightly around my neck. In additon, the smitty lanyard does not absorb the sweat from my neck. As with all equipment, it comes down to personal preference. Some officials like the smitty while others like the noose style.

I know that there are still some old geezers (and I am a bald old geezer myself) in the NBA that do not use a lanyard. When an official does not use a laynard his hand mechanics once he sounds his whistle just do not look clean and crisp. His first move is to always catch his whistle rather that make the required arm and hand motions that are required of him when he sounds his whistle. I am sorry, but a lanyardless official just does not look that good. I have a very good friend who is a very good official including the jr. coll., NAIA, and NCAA Div. III level, who does not use a lanyard, and I always offer him a lanyard whenever we officiate. He never accepts my offer and we have a good laugh over it because like me he is one of the old bald geezers still officiating out there.

I am from Alaska, and the make moose nard ear rings, swizzle sticks, and necklaces......I sure hope that was a whistle.....not a moose nard I used for my last game!!!!

but I don't like having anything around my neck during a game. If someone happens to tug on my smitty, it's just gonna rip off (never happened yet). I don't feel like getting strangled by wearing a noose.
