As to the question of why work so many asked by Ron, because I earn a living doing it.
So as a result I worked nearly 100 games this January, and I am on a similar pace this month. (shorter month) I work 7 days a week this time of year. You have heard the expression "make hay while the sun shines" Other seasons do not offer quite the number of games. I need to make enough money to get through the lean times(and pay for the summer camps ![]() And yes, this does probably hurt my endurance for the "big" school games, but I am in good shape, so far... Even with this number of games, I find myself enjoying the vast majority of games, and that's why I do this. I could (and have) made more money in a conventional occupation. If I could make more money doing less games, yes that would be good, but this is what is currently available to me. |

The Record
BOSS Officials covers youth and adult games
year round in San Diego. This month was very busy with one official doing 108 games. Most of our sites play (4) one hour games and sometimes on weekends we go and do (6). I disagree about the fees being lower because guys settle for lower pay and work too many games. If officials try to negotiate for fees that are out of the normal price range, eventually someone else will underbid, or the director will recruit and train his own group of officials. $18-20 an hour is a fair wage.

Attended a camp last summer that seemed to be a bit of a thrown-together-at-the-last-minute deal. Didn't have enough officials. Some showed up Saturday and then left. Others came on Sunday and left at midday. I was there for the full experience. I think I worked 9 games on Saturday - most were 2-man. I worked 11 on Sunday - most were 3-man (Thank-God). The games were all HS varsity boys - running 20 minute halves, no free throws.
Way too many games; it was several days before my legs and brain were fully oxygenated again. I think I got something out of the camp.... I forget.
