Kicking the ball

I had this happen to me. Tell me what ya'll think.
15 seconds into a Varsity Boys game a player while laying on his back is trying to kick the ball out of an opponents hands. Not once but three times. I called a technical on him for unsportslike conduct, so you can imagine how the rest of that game went. The players coach was livid, saying that kicking the ball was a violation.
