I think you made the correct call. There's a big difference between a player trying to deflect a pass with his foot, and someone kicking at a ball in someone's hands. How would you have felt if you had not called anything because there was no contact, and then one of the kicks hits the player and causes injury? Calling technical fouls for non-contact situations during play is exactly what you're supposed to do in a situation like this.
