Actually, I've had a great week. There no better feeling than when you know you've worked basketball the way it was meant to be worked.

Last Friday night I worked a girls' game where the visiting team was number 2 in the state (in the smallest school division). They hit a 3 at the buzzer to send the game into OT and then the home team pulled it together and won.

Tonight I worked another girls' game -- the visiting team was ranked in the state top 10 (I don't know the division, but the school was fairly small) and both teams were 5-1 in their conference. The game was close throughout, and the home team won when a visiting team's clear attempt at a 3 bounced off the rim, went straight up, and came down and bounced off.

Highlights of these two games were shown on the 10:00 news (last Friday on the CBS station and tonight on the ABC station). I exchanged pleasantries with the cameraman during a timeout, so I knew what station he was with.

I wasn't visible in last week's game and the only time you saw me in tonight's highlight was when you saw my backside getting off the court after the last shot bounced off. Not my best side, but the court was rapidly filling up with student spectators, so I just wanted to get out of the way.

Two more games this week -- boys tomorrow and girls Saturday night. I'd rather not be on TV, but I can only hope these games will be as good as the last couple.

I did a freshman game yesterday, Saturday I have 3 8th grade rec games. I watched some TV tonight. I know I was watching TV because my wife told me to go to bed & grabbed the clicker from my hand. I got my backside upstairs & fell asleep.

Life is good.

What!! You don't want to be on TV. Heck, that's part of the reason a bunch of us officials get together after a game...we meet at the local watering hole and "bribe" whomever is on shift to put all the Televisions on different channels. We sit there and watch what officials did what games. We point and laugh and just generally have a good time...seeing who we can see.
We don't get together all the time, but when we do it feels like our comradarie increases. It also gives us a chance to discuss situations that might have happened recently.

Maybe this TV stuff just feeds our EGOS...but guess what, officials have EGOS! Coaches have EGOS! That's part of what makes this advocation so fun...dealing with EGOS!

I've always thought it was fun to see myself (and others) on tv. Mostly from a sit and laugh as you look at yourself. Most of the time here, you just catch fleeting glances of the refs. I did get a photo of me working a game last weekend sent to me by a friend who saw it on the school's website. It doesn't look like I'm screwing up too bad.

OK, OK, I *do* like seeing myself on TV. I just didn't like the shot LAST night. And last Friday the only official they showed was my partner -- which is OK considering he drove 160+ miles to work a girls' varsity game.

Last night's shot was: Me running away from the camera shot, while about 200 kids sitting in the far bleachers run out on the court. We ran into the losing coach on the way out, and he was dejected. One shot can change everything.

In the shot, I was running at a faster clip in that moment than I did the whole game, which is kinda ironic. I had the worst position -- I was lead and our exit was at the other end of the floor across the court. As I ran past the winning coach, he was still exhaling the sigh that started when the shot bounced off.

I have a public access channel in my hometown (the town where I've only lived for the last few months) that shows the local school games. The announcing team includes a player's dad and some kid from the school who are such homers it's almost laughable. I hope to get some games there next season so I can hear their treatment of me on television.

I love being on T.V. I told my wife I am trying to get my 15 minutes of fame 5 seconds at a time. Also what a feeling to be part of this great sport. Packed gym, place is rocking, band playing, both teams up and down the court. Better than sex (pause) well not quite but close.

Funny you say that. Had Linden at Fenton last Friday night. We called over sixty fouls. You really don't want my opinion on the Metro leauge do you?

What I did hear was that a few years ago the Metro League didn't want to use three officials, but were forced into it so that the other leagues wouldn't get all the good officials, who had decided to go 3-whistle. Since the league officials were "forced" into upgrading their league, I think that pretty much says it all.

It was the County B League in the old days.

We do exactly this every Friday night. Lots of fun, lots of beers, and lots of laughs.

What I did hear was that a few years ago the Metro League didn't want to use three officials, but were forced into it so that the other leagues wouldn't get all the good officials, who had decided to go 3-whistle. Since the league officials were "forced" into upgrading their league, I think that pretty much says it all.

It was the County B League in the old days.

You are really going back now. The county B is no longer it is the GAC now. About 4 years ago the Metro and GAC decided to do go to three officials. So I believe that could be true. Am not sure but sounds like it to me. The metro and GAC still get some of our top officials, but things have not changed. Still hack, hack and hack some more.
