Shoelaces. A Hazard?

I had a coach last night that was all over me to stop the game because HIS point guard could't keep his shoes tied. (JV 8th grade boys).

Screamed that it was a saftey hazard. I did not give it.

Told my partner who supported me - I stop for contacts and glass's on the floor only (besides other specific rules). 14 year olds know how to tye. Coach has timeouts.

Those zip up shoes too. I dont stop a game when a player is tieing there shoe unless the ball is already dead. or shes a hazard to play.

I am glad you stuck to your guns. I do not want to start a riot, but you have the rule book on your side in this situation. Prior to the 1963-64 season, the rules specifically gave the officials the authority to stop the game or withold the ball from play so that a player could tie his/her shoe(s). Starting with the 1963-64 season the Rules Committee specifically deleted this section of Rule 2, because it wanted to forbid the officials from doing this. Once again, I do not want to hear from everybody who disagree with me. I know that this rule change was made almost 30 years ago, but until the Rules Committee makes a change it is still in effect.

I hope that when NF removed it they declared their intent to change the rule rather than removing it without comment We need to be able to distinguish subtle differences in these changes 39 years later.

[/B][/QUOTE]Coach,I remember vaguely when they changed this one.To my best recollection,the way that it was handled 40 years ago,39 years ago,and yesterday still depends on the age of the player and the game situation.We may stop the game while play is going on for the little ones,if there is no impending scoring opportunity or turnover.We do give players the opportunity to do up their shoes,or put them back on,if there is a dead ball.Other areas may do it differently,but we don't look at holding up the game for a coupla seconds to tie shoelaces to be a major concern.

Of course, when us old guys have untied shoes, we aren't moving quickly enough to pose a hazard to us or anyone else, right?

As a ref, I doubleknot my shoes every time. For players I have to go with JR (had an untie issue last night as a matter of fact). I look at it as a safty issue. I'll try and wait for a dead ball if possible. If the coach wants a stoppage then he has time outs. If the ball is already dead, I don't see the harm in taking an extra few seconds on the inbound to let them tie up. If it happens repeatedly I will tell the coach to fix the situation.

I sent a kid out of a 7th grade game earlier this season for the same reason. Coach asked the basis of my actions. I told him; "Coach, the loose laces are a safety hazard. If you can't teach him to tie his shoes so they remain tied, then buy him some bow-biters."

Kid came back in at the next stoppage with his shoes tied and they stayed that way the remainder of the game.

Gees, we looked good with our short shorts and knee socks.
Back then, 63-65, the school bought 'em for us, twice a year, at $22.00 a pop.
