Lately I have been seeing this occur every game, I think because we play different lane rules in AAU (women's NCAA)and we have players adjusting to the NFHS lane rules, where there are more players allowed.

Team A shooting, Team B takes spots 1-3 on the right, 1-4 on the left, with A taking 2-4 on the right and 2 on the left (A has 3 players on the lane, and B moves toward shooter on side where A does not have a second rebounder). After first shot, A1 crosses lane from spot 4 on right to open spot 3 on left. How long do you allow for B1 to switch spots with A1 and put the world back in harmonious order?

I see refs delivering the ball right away, refs looking at B1 like "Duh, are you going to switch already," and several permutations in between. Do you see this often, and if so, how do you handle?

If the players are moving around I just mention to them to get set and I try to get the ball back to the shooter for the second shot as fast as possible without rushing it back to the shooter.

This kind of action usually only takes 5 or 10 seconds. So I ignore it, and let them find the spot where they feel comfy. If they just can't figure it out, and stand there talking to each other about where they're supposed to be, I step in and tell them to take a spot, wait an extra second or two, then bounce the ball to the shooter. It's amazing how fast they figure out where they're supposed to be. . .

Chuck

Lane Spaces?

Not sure what you mean by lane space 2 and 4. There are only three lane spaces available on each side of the key. By NCAA Women's Rules, the bottom lane spaces on both sides MUST be occupied by the defense. The next lane space MAY be occupied by the offense ONLY, and the last or top lane space MAY be occupied by the defense ONLY. This prevents any switching except for spots between teammates.

I thought in women's ball, the bottom lane spaces had to be left empty?

You thought correctly, I think what ncaaref meant was the lowest available space goes to the defense, etc. But I don't see the point of his comment, I thought the original question concerned nfhs. Or maybe I'm just completely confused...

btw, check your test scores yet? i might get around to it in a week or so myself

Sorry to confuse you. In the Fall and at all AAU tournaments, we play NCAA rules, with the first space open, 2 and 4 to the defense, 3 to the offense. The situation I am referring to is occurring in winter games played under NFHS rules.

Seeing as I actually worked with Chuck last summer I would prefer not to discuss his presence, but I understand he got some very nice presents this past holiday season. And he was lucky to get them.

Sorry for Confusion

My apologies gents and or ladies. I assumed he was indicating NCAA Women's rules and as such you're right the bottom lane space is empty. I consider the next lane space the bottom because of that and thus I added to the mix up. Sorry!

Coach, by rule the player has until the free thrower catches the ball to move. See 8.1.2 Comment, 8.1.1A, 4-20-2, and 4-4-7b.
