Just trying to find if a hard cast on the hand, covered with padding is legal for competition in High Shcool ball?

No. The "cast" must be pliable. Any hard cast on the hand is illegal no matter how it is padded.

illegal items include a guard, cast or brace made of hard and unyielding leather, plaster, PLIABLE (soft) plastic, metal or any other hard substance- even though covered with soft padding- when worn on the elbow, hand, finger, wrist, or forearm.

So pliable, would that mean rubber, cloth, foam?

We just had our rules meeting from state coordinator. He too noted that no cast or brace that has anything hard (or even pliable) is admissable--period!

He said basketball suffers because the kid has been able to wrap his cast during football so mom and dad expect son should be able to do it in basketball too. Sorry.

I'm afraid he was mistaken. That's only true on the elbow, hand, finger, wrist or forearm. A hard brace can be legally worn on the leg if padded properly.

If a kid wishes to play with a hard cast on his leg or a hard brace on his knee, he is allowed to, if it is properly padded and does not create a safety issue.

And whether it is properly padded and does not create a safety issue is " the referee's discretion". The only thing wrong with that is Tuesday night Joe Blow didn't give a crud so he didn't mention it, and now it's Friday night and Roger Rulebook makes an issue out of it, it causes some inconsistency among crews, but I guess nothing is perfect.

If there is any question we should not allow it.

Ignoring a safety issue particularly something as obvious as a hard cast would clearly be gross negligence. You arent going to be able to defend that come lawsuit time. make sure that hard brace is not a safety problem.

I've never seen a player play, or even attempt to play with a leg cast. The rule is more designed for knee and ankle braces.

Point well made. I got tunnel vision talking about the hand.

Swinging around a two pound club at the end of your arm could have some severe consequences for the clubee! Padded or not.
