Fan Celebration
Watching the Michigan-Wisconsin game made me think of this question.
With time winding down in 2nd half V lead H by 2 points. With less than a second to go, but before expiration of time H player launches a three right near the 3 point line. Official throws hands in air signifying three points as time expires. H fans rush on court to celebrate, but officials wish to consult monitor. Wisely waiting 5 minutes until all fans are cleared off court they go to monitor and see that it should be a 2 point shot sending game into OT. Start OT with a T? |
I can't believe how many times this same issue has come up this season........ Ting the fans........?!

Not in my wildest dreams

A.R. 252. Team B leads, 67-66. A1’s two-point try for goal is successful, but there is no indication that time has expired. Assuming that the successful try was a game-ending and winning goal: 105 RULE 10 / FOULS AND PENALTIES (1) Bench personnel from Team A; or (2) Fans from Team A go onto the playing court to celebrate. RULING: When the celebration causes a delay by preventing the ball from being promptly made live or prevents continuous play: (1) (Men) A CLASS B technical foul shall be assessed to the head coach. The coach’s technical foul does not count toward the team foul total but does count toward the coach’s ejection. (Women) One bench technical foul shall be assessed to the offending team and counts toward the team foul total. This technical foul is also charged indirectly to the head coach and counts toward the coach’s ejection. (2) An administrative technical foul shall be assessed to the offending team. (Men) This CLASS B technical foul does not apply to the team foul total. (Women) This administrative technical foul does apply to the team foul total. Any player from Team B shall attempt the two free-throws and play shall resume at the point of interruption. When the celebration does not delay or interfere with play, the celebration shall be ignored. (Rule 10-2.9.d and Penalty, 10-4.7 and Penalty, and 10-6.2.h and Penalty) |

That case book plays says there's no indication that time has expired. That's why that case book play is applicable.

If the fans rushing the court don't delay the game, there's no T. In the OP, time expired before / as the fnas rushed the court. There was no delay (delay here is NOT a delay in starting the OT, but in preventing the other team from inbounding the ball). |
