Dealing With Fans

I was observing a game last week when an official during a dead ball looked into the stands and yelled, "You want to stay or go!" to a fan. In our state we are instructed to handle fans by going to the administration at the game. I don't know how this will be handled with this particular official.

How did you write it up in your observation report?

Write-up

I wrote it up pretty much how I described it in the orignal post. I have not heard how it will be handled.

Any idea what may have got the official to react in this way?

I agree game management needs to take care of this, but I'm guessing the fan said or did something to get that kind of reaction. What was the game situation like? How were the fans up to this point? Is this a younger or seasoned official? Not condoning, just curious.

I've worked a game (AAU) with a partner who did this. The partner had been officiating since the end of the Eisenhower administration, far longer than this particular father had even been alive.

Awkward for everyone involved.

I did this once in an AAU game during the summer. I didn't yell at the fan as the fan was within 3 feet of me but more of a very stern warning. Still, I immediately regretted it. I'm not sure how my state would handle this if it was reported. More likely, it wouldn't get to that level but rather stay at the assignor level.

But seriously, I only worry about moms who are good looking, . Oh wait, I have been happily (at least that is opinion that my lovely wife tells me is my opinion) married for 28-1/2 years now, .
