JayR-

ANd all these years I have been calling three in the key, when there has been only two players in the key....No wonder the coaches were getting mad!

Whenever a coach counts out loud like that, tell him that everytime he counts, it confuses you and you have to start over.

Heard a good one last nite from a fellow official.
Was at a game this year and had a fan just SCREAMING "3 Seconds!!" During a time out, the official was standing by where the fan was sitting and said "Hey, do you know that everyone is laughing at you?"
Fan "Why is that?"
Official "Everyone knows that there is no more "3 Second" rule.
Fan "really?'
Official "Yep, it went out about two years ago. When was the last time you saw it called?
Fan "Now that you mention it, I haven't seen it called in years"
Official "There you go then. Just thought I would help you out"

I would have to agree with Mick on this question!

Alot of coaches and players confuse the block/charge situations with time and distance. In my short time officiating I have heard some interesting statements made about block/charge situations. It's pretty simple, a legal guarding position is a legal guarding position.

The hardest rule for an off-season coach (who is really a dad, helping out) is any rule that has changed since he was in high school.

Screens and incidental contact.

"That's a moving screen, Ref (no contact)."

"Holy cow! He knocked him down and no foul call? (legally set pick, outside field of vision with significant contact but no pushing through)"

Three seconds is just an easy one for coaches because they can count that far.... and they like to help.

From the home office.

10. 3 seconds
9. illegal screens
8. carrying
7. multiple foul rule. (ok officials don't understand that either)
6. 10.3.4
5. overtheback
4. backcourt violation
3. incedental contact
2. block/charge legal guarding position

and the #1 answer
1. 10.4.1 unsporting behavior including trying to influence an officials decision.
