A little poll here...
What in your professional opinions is the most misunderstood rule by coaches? I know there are several coaches who read this board (and some ever have the guts to post!) and we might be able to come to a better understanding with your help. I've read the board and have picked up a great deal myself through your discussions! Thanks and have a good day, CoachGRD |
In my humble opinion over the back rebounding or three seconds during loose balls. Many times a player who is blocked out can still jump and reach over a lesser player and get a rebound without fouling. The coach will scream over the back everytime though. Many coaches also don't realize once a shot gos up there is no more three second count.I will see three or for put attempts with the coach yelling three seconds in my ear.

Hmmm, I think it's probably pretty close to a tie. I'd say most coaches really have little if any grasp of Rules 1 through 10. :D
Seriously, I could only guess. The 3-second rule is a good candidate. Chuck |
After obtaining initial legal guarding position a defender may move laterally, backward or obliquely.... No time, or distance, is required when guarding the ball handler.

I've never met a coach yet who understood the backcourt rule in the scenario where team A has acheived control in front court and then B1 knocks the ball off the A1 in front court and then a team A player is the first to touch in backcourt.

I'm with Mick. How many times have you heard, "He wasn't set!" after calling a player control foul because the defender was moving backward when the offense ran him over?
I will also note that I believe quite a few officials don't understand this rule either! |

I would say the "Over The Back" on rebounds as stated in an above post, and the Player Control Foul where the player is still moving but has gained a legal guarding posistion

This is an easy one. The most misunderstood rule by coaches is the rule that I am always right.

I just figured it had to be the "most" misunderstood... :D |
This one is a little off-topic beacause it was a parent not a coach who made this comment.
The story goes that a parent asked the ref after the game why did they not call (3 in the key) more often. The ref tried to answer politely but the mom was adament. She said:"Sometimes, there were 4 or 5 players in the key" Makes you wonder. |

Try calling a "charge"--and then go to the other end and shoot a one and one..then TRY to explain to the coach the difference between a charge and a player control foul..For that reason I don't call "charge" any more--a charge is now a "push".

My Fav
I'm going with 3 seconds for the kids games especially. I love the coach who is over there counting out loud as there is a shot being attempted or on the way already.
Legal moving picks are always fun to hear about. And finally...over and back when A1 still has one of three points in the BC and decides to go back! Thats always a crowd pleaser! Larks VIT |
