AP throw ins
Need a refresher(s) on arrow changing or not:
All plays are with Team A having an AP throw in: (1) Throw in that leaves thrower hand and comes inbounds, touched by several players, but is never in possession by either team and another held ball is called. Arrow is changed and now should be B's throw in? (2) Throw in is air mailed across court without hitting any player. (3) While attempting the throw in, A1 steps across the line and is whistled for a violation. (4)Prior to throw in coming inbounds, B2 fouls A2 Which situations call for arrow to change? Pretty sure I know these but would like to see a response(s) Thanks. |

2) And goes out of bounds I presume? Throw in violation, arrow is switched and B is awarded ball at original throw in spot. 3) Throw in violation. Switch arrow and give ball to B. 4) Throw in did not end. Do not switch arrow and administer foul.

A team loses the arrow if they violate on the throw in. In #2, causing the ball to go out of bounds without being touched is the violation ... therefore, they lose the arrow.

gotcha. thanks. i think the word violates is making my brain freeze. i equate it with other violations, traveling, double dribble and the arrow doesn't change on those. again, thanks.

In addition to BNR's explanation, here are some rule references.
6-4 ART. 4 . . . The direction of the possession arrow is reversed immediately after an alternating-possession throw-in ends. An alternating-possession throw-in ends when the throw-in ends as in 4-42-5. ART. 5 . . . The opportunity to make an alternating-possession throw-in is lost if the throw-in team violates. If either team fouls during an alternating-possession throw-in, it does not cause the throw-in team to lose the possession arrow. 4-42-5 ART. 5 . . . The throw-in ends when: a. The passed ball touches or is legally touched by another player inbounds. b. The passed ball touches or is touched by another player out of bounds, except as in 7-5-7. c. The throw-in team commits a throw-in violation. 9-2-2 ART. 2 . . . The ball shall be passed by the thrower directly into the court from out-of-bounds so it touches or is touched by another player (inbounds or out of bounds) on the court before going out of bounds untouched.

And the arrow doesn't change on "throw-in" violations. It changes on "AP throw-in" violations. And you must also remember that after Team A violates on an AP throw-in the subsequent throw-in by Team B is not an "AP throw-in", it's just a "throw-in".
