Arizona scoring record

Link to story in today's local paper:

McClintock's Cameron Forte sets record with 60 points

and a HS sports columnists response:

azcentral.com blogs - Scott Bordow - Forte's record an exercise in bad judgment

What do you all think? As an official, I don't have a problem with it, as a fan, I don't have a problem with it either.

As an official I'm not even thinking about it.

This has absolutely nothing to do with officiating.

Why in the world would anyone have a problem with someone setting a scoring record?

I only reason I'd care about this if I was officiating was to be on the look out for cheap shots on the player. Besides that, I don't care either way.

As an official, I don't care and there is nothing to be done about it.

As a father, this type of thing p!sses me off. My sons play(ed) for a small private school who regularly gets beaten by the bigger schools in our league. Twice I have had to sit through classless examples of coaching like this one in Arizona. In one case, the Home team was up by 29 points at the start of the 4th quarter, and the coach put his starters in and kept the press on. They ended up winning by 42. The most vocal fans were from the Home school - yelling at their coach to knock it off.

Why this coach in Arizona thought it would be "cool" to keep that kid in and let him take 37 shots against what is essentially a JV team is beyond me as a parent and a fan.

We used to play a school that was a perennial contender for the state title in our class. Let's just say we weren't. It wasn't uncommon for us to lose those games by 40-50 points. My sophomore year, their coach left his starters in at the beginning of the 4th quarter when they were leading by about 50 points.

Our coach had anticipated this and we walked off the court; he faced a two game suspension after that.

I'll bet most ind scoring records are set against inferior competition. Prob the guy he knocked out got his in a similar manner. Nothing we can do about it. Always a bit of a head scratcher when you see "Faces in the Crowd" in Sports Illustrated and there's some kid that scored nine touchdowns in a 70-0 game. X#$%@*^ happens

Coach of losing team could have held the ball, though it seems like they might not have had the talent to do it for very long. They could have played whack-a-shaq since the kid could seem to hit 15 footers. Very little difference from Nebraska beating up on an early season opponent.

But, as an official, I am not keeping track of how some kid is doing with points unless there is a milestone like 1000 points and the game is going to stop to honor the accomplishment. And if a kid needs 37 to get to 1000, I sure as heck am not keeping track. And even if it is 8 or 9, that is why there is an official scorer. And the timer will no doubt sound the horn at the time of the occurrence.

In this case, I would find out in the paper after the fact and think it was like beating my kid brother one-on-one in the driveway as an accomplishment.

I don't like scores being run up for any reason; however, as an official it isn't up to me to prevent it. I think it is "unsportsman like" (so could I call a T for unsporting conduct? ) but I have to call the game as it is played.

That's only because Diebler didn't play HS ball in Arizona.

Right on the money. And Dlebler wouldn't have been 5-10 from the FT line, either.

Nope, he would've been 10-5...because well, he's Diebler.
