Keeping my distance

Based on some feedback from a couple games this season, I'm wondering if I'm getting too close to some plays at T. Is there an optimal distance from the play that is "close enough" to look like you're "on top of it" but far enough away that you can see the whole play without being "right on top of it"?

1' to 94', depending on the play. And a play can go from one extreme to the other in an instant.

I think a lot more is missed being too close than too far.

I've really tried, based on some feedback from a camp I attended, to stay off the court until the ball is near the free throw line. So I'm trying to stay 10 to 15 feet back in the backcourt unless I have activity that requires me to be closer.

Am I reading this correctly? You referee frontcourt activity 10 to 15 feet in the backcourt?

Is this because you are getting slower in your old age or what?

No, you're not reading this correctly. As I trail the play up the court (trail, get it?) I stay 10-15 feet behind the ball.

In the frontcourt, I go where I need to go to see what I need to see. I'm the last person who worries about getting beat down the floor as the new lead. If it happens, it happens.

Ahhhh, "trail"...as in a "trail all the way to the top of Mt. Rainer"?...or "trail" as in "I trail 10 to 15 feet behind the ball because I can't keep up with the young studs anymore"?
