D3 over D1

Even more surprising than the knockdown of the D-I Air Force Academy by the little D-III sharing the city of Colorado Springs has been the reaction at the Academy.

“We're not going to schedule any more D-IIIs. That's an absolute,” Air Force athletic director Hans Mueh, told Frank Schwab of The Gazette the day after the defeat, in which Colorado College defeated the Falcons 60-57, Nov. 17.

Comical. I'm a big AFA fan, but I have an officiating friend who is an assistant coach at CC. It's not as if it's the first DIII school to do this (I think Briar Cliff beat Iowa State a few years ago). I can understand the thought process though; playing a DIII is a lose-lose for the D1 school.

I would not say it was a lose-lose unless you win. It is usually a great way to play a game and get some reps for your team. But this has happen more than a few times. Players across the country are just getting better. And there is always a player or two on these teams that could play at the D1 level if they got the right hype or went to the right school. I think Northwestern got beat a few years ago by a local area D3 school a couple of seasons ago. I just do not have the interest to look up for the actual school.

Peace

LOL, being from Iowa, the Briar Cliff thing clicked my memory. My college, an NAIA II school, played Briar Cliff annually. It was the equivalent of Iowa State playing Briar Cliff. I say lose-lose because it does nothing if they win; but if they lose all hell breaks loose. Personally, I'm not sure I'd think the experience was worth the risk as an AD. It's like Nebraska scheduling Walkover State for a nice September football game; but with more risk.

You're right about the talent level.
