NCAA: Use of Replay

Great Alaska Shootout tonight: Drake v. Weber State game. At the end of the game, the officials went to the monitor to review (apparently) whether or not they should assess a technical foul for a player spiking the basketball. I didn't think this was an approved use. Thoughts?

As far as I know, that is not one of the allowed uses of the monitor. I can't even imagine why you'd want to use the monitor for that. My guess is that they were checking for a timing error or maybe they thought there had been some shenanigans just before the stoppage in play.

Thanks. Here's a game note from the MVC website... doesn't sound like it.

"Drake (2-3) thought it had the game won when Lillard, who finished the game with 31 points, drove the lane and was called for an offensive foul.
But Bulldogs forward Aaron Hawley spiked the ball after the whistle and was called for the technical. Referees reviewed the play before confirming the call." (Source)

Says the T was with 5.7 remaining. They could have been looking at the clock or checking to see if the action was flagrant and warranted an ejection--ie did he throw the ball at an opponent?

I guess that the only people who know for sure are these guys:

I'm guessing Hawley won't be doing that again.
