NBD, just sorta interesting

Saw this last Friday evening: Team A having trouble inbounding against a heavy press. Finally, A1 standing oob with the ball, HANDS it to A2. I've never seen it in 11 years of reffing. It took me a minute to react, but I did. Girls were puzzled and needed an explanation. Hhmmm..... I'm thinking, "If it were legal, why wou, ldn't you do it every time?"

Last night: Different Team A having trouble inbounding against a heavy press. Finally, A1 standing oob with the ball, yells, "Uh-Oh!" A2 steps oob on the other side of the key, A1 passes it to her, A2 inbounds. Unfortunately, it wasn't after a made basket, it was a spot throw-in. Didn't take long to react to this one. I've seen this play before, but never illegally.

Two such plays in one week. Phase of the moon, maybe?

Waning Crescent ???

Tuesday night. Girls varsity. Two five second throwin violations in the first period, against the same team. The opponent's press wasn't very good, this team's press break was just really, really, bad.

Don't you think that you should have ignored those two violations in the interest of advancing your officiating career?

I had a GV game last week. One of my P's and I was there early and we were watching the JV game. THREE times in the 2nd and 3rd quarter one player was called for stepping across the line while inbounding the ball. All Three times it was by the same ref and on a side line - never an end line.

I was thinking:

1) Three times in one game by the same player? That's gotta be rare.
2) When is she going to learn that's against the rules and stop doing it?
3) But, most importantly, when is that coach going to have someone else inbound the ball? Sheesh!

I had a partner in a rec game last night call a violation when the inbounder stepped on the line while throwing in. I had to correct him. It took a minute for it to sink in for him that the line is OOB.

No, ignoring these violations wouldn't advance my career. I only ignore what my assignor (who was on the rules committee btw and calls ALL the shots in this area!) tells me to ignore. You call it crass politics. I call it being consistent with other refs in my area.

Maybe, but I think I'd better go now while I'm still well-saying. That guy can get so annoying...

You could also look at it as performing your job (officiating) as your boss (assignor) would like you to, even if you - and industry 'best practices' - believe there may be another way because you want to keep your job and progress in your profession.
