Backcourt violation funny

GV tonight. I'm the new Lead and A1 completes a throw-in after B scores. B has a full court press on. As I'm standing at the division line, A throws a pass toward the FC. (My partner is trapped on the opposite side of the court in front of the bench) A's teammate jumps from the FC, catches the pass, and lands in the BC. I knew it wasn't technically my call to get as Lead, but it happened right in front of me, so I called it. A's coach is just beside himself, and I can see my partner explaining it to him. I went in front of A's bench after an OOB, and he asks me about it. He says that "That's the first time I've ever seen that called", and after I reinforce the fact that it's a BC violation, he says "Well it may be, but no one ever calls that". I just shrugged my shoulders and went on with things. I wanted to respond with something like "Well you have good officials tonight who know the rules", but didn't have time.

Must have been 2 person. Good call. If you hadn't called it, would not the coach of team B be rightfully upset.

Maybe he's never seen it called either and wouldn't know the difference!?

Agree with the other posters: this is your call to get. Thus your positioning near the division line (depending on where the players are).

Don't worry about the coach not knowing the rules. All you can do is give a quick explanation.

Finally, for clarification: was this a throw-in pass that A catches, or was the throw-in complete and they now had team control? If it's the former, then it is no longer a violation.

Well, in 2-man it is usually the Trail's call to make, but it's one of those that either can call if we see it.

I know about the coach. It was just funny that he thought we shouldn't have called it even though it's a violation simply because "No one ever calls that".

It was not a throw-in, hence the reason I said in the OP that the throw-in was completed.

The point is, in transition, it's absolutely leads call during a press; that's why you're positioned that way. Well, it's part of it. I've made this call from C during a press. A2 caught the pass standing in the front court, stepped backwards to start his momentum and crossed the line.

I can tell you with certainty the coaches around here would wonder why it wasn't called. I feel lucky.
