over the backboard

if a shot is taken and the ball bounces on the rim and goes over the
back board and a player is able to rebound the ball behind the basket,
is the ball considered out of bounce or is the ball still in play. when the
ball bounces over the back board, it does not hit anything on its way
down.

Assuming the backboard is rectangular, the ball is out of bounds (but, it probably will still bounce ). Rule 7.1.2.b.

Who You Gonna Call? Mythbusters ...

The front, top, sides, and bottom of the backboard are all in play. The ball cannot pass over a rectangular backboard from either direction. The back of a backboard is out of bounds as well as the supporting structures.

Same situation. Is it correct that the ball can pass over the back of a fan shaped backboard and it is NOT automatically out of bounds AND if it hits inbounds or is caught - play on?
