I agree, and in this case it doesn't seem this was intentional.

Here is an example of a potential offensive kicking violation that happened in a game I worked last night. We didn't call this, but in hindsight I think it probably should have been. It comes down to the definition of "striking", which is what the rule prohibits.

Here's the situation. Team has the ball and is passing it around the perimeter. Player from team A doesn't catch the pass cleanly and deflects the ball away. It is rolling on the forward toward the sideline and headed out of bounds, with the girl that should have caught the pass in pursuit. She realizes she is not going to be able to pick the ball up before it goes out of bounds, so she executes a perfect soccer move and steps on top of the ball stopping it dead on the floor a few inches short of the sideline, where she picks the ball up, passes back to the point guard and they reset the offense.

Has a kicking violation been committed?

Thanks. I must have missed this one. My initial reaction when I saw this happen last night was that stepping on does not equal striking, so I let it go. After we discussed it as a crew and I thought about it some more, I now believe the intent of the rule is that the foot can't be used to gain an advantage by controlling the ball, and I should have called the violation. From reading this thread, that seems to be the consensus here also.

I saw this variation and it caused me pause.

Dribbler A1, moving pretty quickly dribbles ball across the division line. In the front court, the sequence is right foot contacts floor, left foot contacts floor, ball contacts... dribbler's right foot (!) and bounces well into the back court. A1's momentum had caused them to be well into the front court.

A1 raced back to retrieve the ball, only to be met with a whistle for "over and back" near the "base line".
