Game Log

I know some of us have talked about this at various times but I don't think that we've had a thread on it (unless I've missed it somehow).

How many of you keep a game log/journal/whatever you want to call it? If you keep one, what do you keep in it?

This is my first year of keeping one and I think it has been a great addition. It forces me to critic my performance when I get home when I'm not hyped up. Then when I get the game tape/DVD (sometimes a week or two later), I can see how it looks on video as compared to my initial observations. It's a great tool, IMO

Here is was I have outlined to include but I usually add a lot more:

1. Date
2. Game (Teams, Location, # of games)
3. Officials
4. Assigned by
5. Mileage
6. Incidents
7. Play(s) of interest
8. Area(s) of emphasis
9. Comments

Game Journal

I use it to review calls situations that occured - calls I might want back, great calls, communication anything that stands out in my mind after the game.
How did I manage the things I am working on? etc.
I try to use it as a learning tool as well as notes on teams coaches and players that might be helpful in the future.

I noted Sunday when reviewing my upcoming schedule for the week. on Saturday I have a coach I had an incident with last year, and she got my goat and I Stuck her, quite unprofessionally, I might add.
So this week I will look back on last years notes as to what occured and make sure that I do not let it happen again.
If I have to stick her it will be low and slow. However the goal is to go in with a clear slate and not have any incident.

I am still in the early phase of developing my "referee battle rhythm" and seeing what's right for me.

Example - I am on my forth equipt bag in three yrs as I want to see which is best for me (still working on it - used rolling carry on earlier this yr and using rolling garment bag this week).

My "journal" is more for tax purposes (date, teams, location, distance, partner) but I have yet to expand it to include lessons learned, issues, things to work on, etc. We'll see......

Been using one for 5 years now. Great for taxes, professional growth, teaching, and just bringing back old memories. Also good for keeping track of points too. I also included comments on the game, the coaches, the players, things I did well, things I did "no-so-well" (often a long portion), and any incidents that might bear remembering. Personally, I recommend every official keep an accurate log of their games each year.

(NOTE: I do this for Football as well.)
