Leaving the court

Odd situation....I am on end line administering throw in...close to defensive team bench....lot of shouting from fans ..rising above normal cheering.. glance at team bench reveals player has left floor in pain literally running to sit on team bench(shoulder dislocation),..I stop play while he is attended to and we restart after sub comes in ...upon reflection should I have penalized for leaving court ?

No. Consider an injury to be an automatic reason.

I would agree, use some common sense if it was clear the player was injured.

Peace

Common sense with NFHS rules? Come on, you've got to be kidding?

This is one you penalize only when a player is trying to gain an advantage. For example, there's lots of traffic in the post, so they go around the endline.

The rules cover stuff that happens in the normal course of play. Sometimes we get weird stuff that has nothing to do with the normal course of play. This situation is an example. It's important to realize that such situations are not the normal course of play and not go looking for some penalty to apply to them.

Perhaps the question you should be asking is, how did the player's shoulder become dislocated and did you miss a foul?

He's safe enough. For now.

Just so you know, we don't negotiate with coaches.

For Bits

I can assure you that I did think of that (missing a foul) and it was determined he dislocated it by diving (and landing) hard on the floor. Perhaps the question you should ask with your sly emoticons is "what is it in my make up that forces me to be such an insufferable know it all"...back to the original question ..what if he had then ran back onto the court...in a close game.. ? perhaps the rule has a purpose after all...And spare me the juvenile emoticons please

Common sense does not come from any rulebook. Common sense comes from your experience, your way of thinking and the people you work from. If you are looking for common sense in a rulebook (or casebook), that is the wrong place if you ask me.

Peace
