Optional Coaching Box

Optional Coaching Box was not marked. State uses a 14' box at the 28' to 14' mark. Game managment didn't want to mark up their new floor with tape but they eventually did. I seem to remember that if the box wasn't marked, the visitor got to use it but home didn't. Can't find this in any books though. Maybe it was a state adaptation? How do you do it if the box isn't marked and they won't/don't mark it?

If it isn't marked, then they don't get a box. They get to sit on the bench the whole game. As far as the vistor getting to use it and the home not getting to..it might be a state adaptation but not around here.

Marked or not, most coaches consider the box optional. At least that has been my experience.

In our state if one does not have the box, the other coach does not get the box. We also use the 14 foot box, but if for some reason there is only a 6 foot box on one bench, then both use the 6 foot box.

We are also instructed to have someone tape the boxes if they are not painted on the floor. This is something we talk about in the pre-game meeting if necessary and just let them know the situation.

Peace

You should give the home coach the option - put tape on the floor for the boxes or put tape over his mouth. His choice.

Can't it be both?

IAABO Connecticut Only ...

CONNECTICUT MECHANICS:
Point to floor for two-point field goal try when shooter has foot touching three point line.
No long switches when foul is called in the backcourt and there is no change of possession or direction.
Team members are not allowed to congregate at midcourt during introductions. Officials will direct players to free throw line area in front of respective benches.
Coaching Box must be marked. If home coach and/or home management refuse to designate coaching box with tape, the home team will not use a coaching box for that game. However, the visiting team will be allowed a coaching box. Notify Board Secretary, or Commissioner the next day.

Per NFHS Rules, the Coaching Box does not exist unless the StateHSAA adopts the Coaching Box Rule. And even if at StateHSAA does adopt the Coaching Box Rule, if the Coaching Box is not marked then the game will be played under the actual NFHS Rules: no Coaching Box.

If the StateHSAA adopts the Coaching Box Rule, it must be marked for both teams or neither team will have the Coaching Box for the entire game.
