Eligibility?

Has anyone ever been ask to question a players eligibillty (or in-eligibility) due to grades or age. (etc) Do we as officials have the resposibilty to enforce eligibility requirements? I personaly don't think it would be up to the game official.

Not here in "The Land of Steady Habits". The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC), our sports governing body, that covers all public, and Catholic schools, in our state, takes care of those kind of issues through the coaches, athletic directors, and principals. The closest we come to any eligibility issue is to file a report with the CIAC when we eject a player, or a coach. That player, or coach, must sit out the next contest at that level (freshman, junior varsity, varsity), however, we don't get involved in any way with the enforcement of that suspension.

Good question. Officials typically stay out of these situations. They are handled by the state association to my knowledge. I had a situation in a JH game on Thursday about a player participating in too many quarters, I just let the coach know that is taken care by game administration as it is not covered in the NFHS rules.

If it ain't in the rule book, I don't need to enforce it. Academic eligibility is one issue that is clearly outside the basketball rule book. And it should be that way.

Um, what about 4-34-4? "A team member is a member of bench personnel who is in uniform and is eligible to become a player."

I'll just sit back and watch now...

That's like saying jerseys can't be "illegal" unless they were stolen.
