Question

What is the advantage, or purpose, of wearing the looped lanyards, tight to the throat with the V-neck shirts?
I see it a lot at the college level, and I am thinking it is a fashion statement that looks odd.
I see it as a potential threat to safety.
I am hoping there is a purpose, or a requirement.
Thanks.
mick

I think that these are very comfortable and the lanyard is longer so it allows for more movement. Common on Mick, refs creating a fashion statement, what.

If you do not wear it tight to your throat the silly thing flops all over the place when you run, I about put my eye out after a half when I didn't slide my bead up.

Since there is no collar to keep it under control and the elastic loops (presumably for a smitty) there are worthless, it is just the way it is...for now.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm weary to wear something that is called a noose.

Just brings up too many bad thoughts . . .

I use the Smitty all the time, and have not yet had a shirt loop break on me. I've never had a problem with the loop. Just my experience.

NCHSAA requires us to wear the smitty. Lanyards are illegal.

Wow. NY requires us to wear a lanyard, apparently some kid
slipped on a whistle that fell to the floor due to a bad
Smitty loop. I wore a Smitty for a while myself but I
haven't since a loop broke on me, maybe 5 yrs ago.
I wear the lanyard "tight" to keep it from flopping
around, like Brian. (I don't mean Brian flops around, I
mean he wears his tight to prevent this like I do.)

I wear mine real close to the neck. I put the whole lanyard around my neck and fasten it where the clip is. That way, I can see when I run down the court.

My association requires us to wear either the lanyard or the smitty. I personally prefer the smitty and I have never had one to break. Some of our officials don't use either during rec games, but I can't do this. I tried a couple of times but I spent most of my time trying to retreive my whistle after I spit it out.

I prefer the Smitty myself, but surely you jest when you say that the North CarolinaHSAA requires the Smitty and only the Smitty to be worn. It seems to me that the NCHSAA is trying to micromanage everything. Do they mandate that all officials must wear the V-neck even though the NFHS still allows the Byron collar shirt to be worn?

Just to chime in, Mark, Massachusetts also requires us to use the Smitty and to wear V-neck shirts. NO collars, NO lanyards. Period.

Thank you, Chuck. NC is the same. V-neck shirt, and a smitty. No collars, no lanyards. Pleated or regular black slacks may be worn. No white on the shoes.

iref21, you're "firetrucking" hilarious.

It's a comfort issue - much like those Fox 40 CMG whistles...I tried the lanyard and the CMG last summer, liked them both, and haven't gone back...
