Michigan does not have a specific lanyard guideline that we have to follow. Some use the smitty's and others use the neck lanyards. However, all of my college assignors require us to use the neck lanyards.

I started wearing the lanyard after I had the Smitty loop come out of my shirt as I reached for my whistle to signal I was about to toss. It was a shirt I had just taken out of the bag.
Occasionally, I wear a smitty, but I always have the lanyard in my pocket. |

Interesting point about no white on the shoes. I am pretty sure that the officials manual states something to the effect that we should wear all black shoes. My association allows black or white (I have both), but all members of the crew have to wear the same thing. I don't recall the state level saying anything about this. I usually don't see white on the shoes except at the varsity level -- not sure why.

I have used both.
I have used both and have had problems with "smitty" lanyard. I do like using the Smitty Lanyard, but I have had them fall off in the middle of games. Then it gets really hard to use when you spit out the whistle every time you make a call.
Now I carry both with me on the floor. So if one does not work I can use the other. And I also have an extra whistle or whistles with that. It just comes down to personal preference. Peace

In central Florida we are required to wear the v-neck.
We have the option of using the Smitty or the lanyard and I prefer the lanyard because it is longer and feels more comfortable. I have had a loop almost break while using a smitty. I use the loop with the lanyard so that it doesn't flop around. Then fasten the bead up about 1/2 inch from the neck. Works for me. Mike |
