Michigan does not have a specific lanyard guideline that we have to follow. Some use the smitty's and others use the neck lanyards. However, all of my college assignors require us to use the neck lanyards.

I started wearing the lanyard after I had the Smitty loop come out of my shirt as I reached for my whistle to signal I was about to toss. It was a shirt I had just taken out of the bag.

Occasionally, I wear a smitty, but I always have the lanyard in my pocket.

I did a game this winter with a guy who was trying to get used to not using a lanyard or a Smitty. It was sort of funny at first, but it got real old, real fast...

Interesting point about no white on the shoes. I am pretty sure that the officials manual states something to the effect that we should wear all black shoes. My association allows black or white (I have both), but all members of the crew have to wear the same thing. I don't recall the state level saying anything about this. I usually don't see white on the shoes except at the varsity level -- not sure why.

I'm sorry, but white shoes and black pants together is tacky. Your shoes should never be lighter than your outfit. That is the only rule of fashion that I know.

Oh, my!
I have always found it quite appropriate for white pumps with taupe.
That doesn't work?

My skin is white enough that if I'm wearing black shorts, I vastly prefer white socks and shoes. Otherwise, I really look strange (as do all the other white guys and gals, but I don't feel like insulting anyone today) Just one more reason to envy dark-skinned people. But with long black pants, I agree with you.

I prefer the Smitty myself, but surely you jest when you say that the North CarolinaHSAA requires the Smitty and only the Smitty to be worn. It seems to me that the NCHSAA is trying to micromanage everything. Do they mandate that all officials must wear the V-neck even though the NFHS still allows the Byron collar shirt to be worn?
Mark, the NF got rid of the Byron collar definition in 2001-2002 Rulebook.

Peace

I have used both.

I have used both and have had problems with "smitty" lanyard. I do like using the Smitty Lanyard, but I have had them fall off in the middle of games. Then it gets really hard to use when you spit out the whistle every time you make a call.

Now I carry both with me on the floor. So if one does not work I can use the other. And I also have an extra whistle or whistles with that.

It just comes down to personal preference.

Peace

In central Florida we are required to wear the v-neck.

We have the option of using the Smitty or the lanyard and I prefer the lanyard because it is longer and feels more comfortable. I have had a loop almost break while using a smitty. I use the loop with the lanyard so that it doesn't flop around. Then fasten the bead up about 1/2 inch from the neck.

Works for me. Mike
