What does Steve Wellmer have to do with my question?

Ch1town:

My post was not meant to make fun of you. As many people will tell you I honestly make valuable contributions to this forum from time to time. (Ouch, I just think I broke my arm, trying to pat myself on my back. ) And before I made my post, a number of members of this forum gave some good examples of officiating "big" and helping one another to be better officials is the number one goal of the forum. But I just couldn't let a Steve Wellmer joke go by. I am sure that if some of us have not driven you to ask Mark Pagdett to start sharing his meds with you by the start of next season, I hope that we can get you to join in the Steve Wellmer drinking game. That is all I am going to say about the drinking game but I am sure that some of our fellow officials will be glad to fill you in on it.

Have a good summer season.

I didn't take it in a bad way, I was just trying to understand the joke as I'm not in loop on many of them. FTR, I've always valued your contributions to the board.
Have a great summer too sir!

The phrase "Referee Big" is not just the lastest camp speak--Goerge Toliver has been using the phrase at his camp for over a decade. Ed Rush Sr. defines it as Projecting a Presence when you referee. Carry yourself where you exude an aura of being in command.

Basically means to officiate like you are the crew chief/R in your crew. By refereeing big you show you are in control and can be believed.

Also commonly referred to as Court Presence.

The feedback I received this summer at camp was similar. For me it is posture. I have a tendancy to bend at the waist occasionally on certain calls -- usually when I move forward to "sell the call". I don't do it all the time, but when I give a preliminary signal (ie., hold or hand-check) at the spot of the foul I occasionally finish with my shoulders rolled forward and I slightly bend at the waist. The clinicians said they were knit-picking, but that is why we go to camp -- to polish our game. The recommendation -- and I worked on it at camp -- is to stand more upright (with better posture) through those particular calls.

Great advice. I'll have to stop jumping up in the air and throwing my arms up while I yell "Yahoo!" every time I call a technical. Maybe I should start yelling "Google" instead.

Similar to how it's been put forth to me. I'm 6' 5". Whenever I've heard that I'm not referee'ing big it's when I have bad posture or my signals are weak and/or presented too low.
