Thumbs up Let's go back to 1939

With the NCAA tournament in the news, our local rag, The Oregonian, ran a story on the first NCAA basketball champs, the 1939 Oregon Ducks. A link is below. Note that on the bottom of page 3 it mentions the rule as it was then that only a team captain could "call" a timeout and only the team captain - not the coach - could speak to the officials! MTD Sr.- is that how it really was?

Ah - the good old days.

And Lets Go To 1950

While we're talking about different eras, my dad used to tell me stories (and it's verified on the web) that when he got his Masters at CCNY in 1950, they won both the NCAA and the NIT tourney in the same year! Different times and different tourneys - sure! But, still pretty cool!

Those CCNY teams also got nailed for shaving points and they had their titles taken away and it also caused the school to drop basketball.

Not really cool at all.

No worries. Not like it was your fault.

Was it?

BTW - the first year of the tournament, 1939, was the first year played under the new rule that when a team scored a basket, the other team got the ball OOB. Up through 1938, there was a jump ball after every basket.

Also, the Duck's coach in 1939, Howard Hobson, taught a match-up zone. He said that by doing that, the other team's offense didn't know what kind of offensive sets to use, those designed to work against zones or those designed to work against man-to-man.

The guy was way ahead of his time. He also advocated widening the lane and putting in a 3-point line.
