Question

I want to know any mechanic differences for High School 3 person from College 3 Person. I will be working a high school playoff game tonight that will be using a 3 person crew on a boys game. Are the mechanics the same as men's 3 person at the college level? Do they use the same floor coverage? Do they do long switches on backcourt fouls? Etc. Any answers would be helpful.

No offense, but doesn't your state require you to work a minimum number of high school games before getting a playoff assignment?

I do a lot of high school and college. In our state we usually only use 3 person for playoffs in high school. So during the regular season I use 2 man mechanics for high school. Any answers to my specific question would be appreciated.

Floor coverages differ. The major difference is that the lead has responsibility for the entire base line, even the corner outside of the 3 pt arc. You need to find a college pre-game card to see the coverages.
Just be sure to have a thorough pregame.

Use the NFHA official's manual to highlight differnces and have a thorough pregame. If the other refs know nc2a 3 man mechanics, I'm not sure you should stray too far from what you know. The coaches won't know the difference if they had 2 man NFHS all season...

haberlach,
Coverages for College and High school are very similar.
College Men and Women vary on different points to High school.

High School:
  • No long switches for a foul in the back court which will go toward the the front court.
  • Last Second shot is opposite.
  • Lead almost never looks outside the arc, or marks a three, unless there is no one else around.

Pre-game this stuff; it'll go easy.
    You won't have a problem.

  • Mick, isn't college the same for the second and third bullet above? The only difference, I think, is the first one. College requires us to long switch in the backcourt, which is fine with me anyway. But why did you include the first two?

Are you saying, according to NFHS mechanics,

    1) that the Lead is supposed to call fouls outside the 3-point line?

    Or

    2) that he's responsible for the OOB call if it squirts out anywhere on the endline?

If you're saying #1, then I think that must be incorrect. Although I don't officiate 3-man in HS, I can't imagine that they want the Lead watching the ball out there. In fact, I'm looking at the coverage chart right now, and it does not indicate that the Lead should be watching action on the ball outside the 3-point arc.

If you're saying #2, then how is that different from college? In college 3-man, the Lead is responsible for OOB calls for the entire endline, although in practice, he may ask for help from the C if the ball goes OOB on the far side of the lane.

    Just trying to clarify,

    Chuck

    Chuck,
Mostly, I listed those because I didn't realize that the post wanted the difference between Men and High School. I was thinking he asked for the difference between college and high school.
The women differences come into play in the 2nd and 3rd.

    A three person high school?

How would they field a basketball team?

    Thumbs up Hey, Nick!

Congrats on the semi. Which game did you work? With whom? I'm sure you did fine.
