I agree for the most part, though I finally heard him make at least a semi-intelligent comment. They were talking about a foul call (that I agree was a "close" call - it was a foul on a dunk put-back, can't remember the game now) and after calling it a terrible call, he at least said something along the lines of, "but that's the way it goes, there are a lot of terrific officials out there and they'll tell you that none of them has ever called a perfect game."

It was somewhat of a "officiating is a human endeavor and never without mistakes" comment, which is better than just saying "they suck."

That said, it is obvious he's gonna be all over officials the rest of the way.

Is this any different with any other coach? If you listen to ESPN often, they complain about the officiating and calls that they do not understand or they feel the officials blew. A great example of this was when you listen to Doug Gottlieb. He is always complaining about calls and he complained a call in the Georgetown game where a GT player was fouled on a dunk and hung on the rim. Gottlieb claimed there should have likely been a T for hanging on the rim. But the Hank Nichols made it very clear that a fouled shooter that dunks cannot be called for a T. But as usually Gottlieb's only knowledge of the game is mostly as a player. He never officiated a day in his life and why he made such stupid comments earlier about Rick Hartzell. Knight is no different. He has spent his entire life coaching and he never looks at the game through the official's eyes and likely never will. I never expect coaches and players to have a different opinion than they do. Even Jay Bilas, who actually seemed like he knew the rules really well, spends a lot of this time ripping officials. I really think that is the direction ESPN is going with their commentating and someone more than the commentators in my opinion are pushing those kinds of comments.

Peace

I didn't see the game but ESPN has a piece about the ASU game and the call on the dunk. The Pac-10 refs have been doing a very good job this year but because of close games at the end of the season combined with questionable(sometimes bad calls) the spotlight is one them. If ASU doesn't get in thats their own fault. They had a bunch of chances to get good wins. And yah ESPN has been more critical of the refs than in years past. I guess they need something to talk about rather than showing the same stuff over and over again. at least its not poker...

Yeah, it is different. Very few coaches sound on the way Knight does. I've got better things to do than to listen to Bobby talk about officials. That's when I turn his moronic talk off.

Speaking of morons, Gottlieb is as stupidest as they come.

Well, I really do not know who you can listen to that does not go on and on about the officiating when calls are not to their liking. I can point you to a web site that does not have famous coaches and all they do is complain about the officiating no matter what the contest is. Knight is not different. And you do not need this to be about coaches, Will McDoungouh (sp?) went on and on about how many fouls were called in a Big East Contest (I think WV and UConn). It is just what they do. I do not listen to any commentators for their insight on officiating. If I did I would always be frustrated. Also Knight was not the only one going off about the call. The Pac-10 Tournament commentators covering the Washington State-Oregon game went off about the call in the Arizona State game. (sorry his name escapes me right now, but he went to UCLA under Wooden) Knight just made his comments on ESPN, they are all the same as far as I am concerned.

Yes, and he proves it every time he opens his mouth.

I am starting to understand why I loved attending the Big Ten Tournament every year for the last 7 years or so. I usually do not have to hear a lot of the stupidity. Man, I should have gone to Indianapolis. Thank God I am going to Peoria in the morning.

Peace

When I first read this sentence, I didn't know what to think, since I've been to Peoria. But then I noticed the grin and it all made sense.

I will not be going to Big Al's if that is what you are thinking.

I'm imagining a JRut/Padgett combo announcing the NCAA tourney (of course, Padgett is doing color, or, er, off color commentary ).

Maybe Juulie on the sidelines, as kind of an Erin Andrews of Officiating.com

I'd love to work that with Rut. Of course, I do have radio experience of doing play-by-play, so I'd rather do that part. As for Juulie working the sidelines, we could have her do her Dick Vitalis impression. It's really slick - get it?
