How is that not a foul?
New to the board so I apologize if this topic has been covered before but how many times have you heard "How is that not a foul" or some varition of it.
What is the respone? In my mind it is not normally a question worth responding to but I wanted to hear what other people think. |

For example, "Coach the defender kept his verticality." Or "Coach, the defenders were just standing there and in legal guarding position." Usually using that verbiage limits their argument because most coaches have no idea what those words mean in the first place. Or I have said, "Because it was not a foul." That usually bring a debate, but that is if I just feel it is not a foul and I do not want to get into all the crap with them in the first place. Peace

I often hear this quip from ignorant coaches and fans and I often wish I could blow my whistle the moment I hear it and reply something like this: "have you ever heard of the cylinder principle... are you sure you want me stop your players fast break lay up for that tap on the arm?...defenders are permitted to defend, they are not required to move out of the way when your child is driving to the basket...and best of all: because I didn't call it a foul! |

It seems that the time I hear this the most often is on a drive to the basket where there is contact I judge to be incidental, and make it a no-call. These are often closer to Player control type contact, and I'll turn to the coach and say, "Who initiated the contact?" That is usually the end of the discussion.

Kinda like the famous exchange on 'Kung Fu.'
Caine: "Old man, how is it that you know these things?" Master Kan: "Young man, how is it that you do not?"

(dangerous to memorize any particular answer. But really fun to talk about. take your pick)
Coach: How is that not a foul? . . . 1) Did you hear a whistle? 2) Please tell your players to stop fouling so much. 3) Yeah, it was all I could do to not call a foul on your guy there. 4) Coach, I can hear you. 5) You can give a rules lesson later, right now I've got a game to do. (immediately walk away if you want any of these replies to even have a chance at working....LOL) |
