I didn't see this thread until this morning, but I think Z nailed the answer. Everybody thinks that they're better than they really are. That's why we go to camp, because objective observers see the flaws that we don't see in ourselves.

As for all the other stuff, others have already given you the answer. Control what you can control and don't worry about the other stuff. When you work with this guy, you can't control him or his ego or the respect that he gets. Just work the game as hard as you can and somebody will notice.
