I use an ABCDE approach that takes just a moment:

A=always signal for a 20-second timeout immediately when one is called if that is what you want; if not, then you get a full

B=book gets checked by each coach for players names, numbers, and starters, and then initialed by coach (no excuses then if there is an "administrative" problem with the book)

C=coach's box reminder

D=designate captains

E=equipment and uniforms, are they all legal and being worn properly?

And then we officials go get the captains and have the pre-game conference with them.
