My pregame conference with coaches and captains are struggling. I'd like some advice from the vets. What "exactly" should I say or go over besides "have a good game, good luck!" Thanks a lot! Peace.

I use an ABCDE approach that takes just a moment:

A=always signal for a 20-second timeout immediately when one is called if that is what you want; if not, then you get a full

B=book gets checked by each coach for players names, numbers, and starters, and then initialed by coach (no excuses then if there is an "administrative" problem with the book)

C=coach's box reminder

D=designate captains

E=equipment and uniforms, are they all legal and being worn properly?

With the captains, keep it short! They don't need or want a clinic. Obviously there are lots of styles and personal preferences out there, but I keep it simple: 1) designate the speaking captains, 2) ask if there are any questions, and lately, because it's been a problem too many times, 3) remind them to check shirts during breaks in the action so we don't have to bug them about tucking them in (it actually seems to be helping, though maybe it's just my imagination). Short and sweet.

The pregame should vary with the level of play, you may have to give a mini lecture to younger kids, but when dealing with varsity and men and women it is short and sweet "shirt tails in jewelery off any questions? Have a good game." Of course this assumes no special circumstances with the court markings etc.

In my pregame conferences I explain to the kids that they are captains for a reason and I expect them to help me keep their teamates
under control the shirts tucked in and get us all the loose balls that bounce into the corners of the gym. then wish them goodluck!

To Coaches:
1. If standing, please do so from your box.
2. Break huddle on first horn.
3. Please signal, or have asst. signal type of TO.
4. "Have a good game"--I never say 'good luck' since I once had a coach respond, "Are you saying I need luck tonite"

To Players:
1. Who is speaking?
2. Take care of your teams.
3. Listen to us when we try to talk you out of a foul.
4. No trash talking
5. Have a great game.

Lots of great advice from others. Just keep it short and to the point. Usually they don't pay any attention to us anyway.
