Another Backcourt Sitch

Team A has the ball in its frontcourt. A1 passes to A2, who muffs the ball. Ball bounces in the backcourt just behind the division line. A2, without going into the backcourt, grabs the ball as it is in the air over the backcourt, recovers it and goes on to score.

Violation, or not?

Interesting. This happened in the Duke-Michigan game today right in front of Ted Valentine.

He didn't call anything.

I guess he didn't read AR191 (which, while not quite the same play sure seems to show that this would be a violation.)

Or else he just missed it.

This is a violation, the ball location became the backcourt when it contacted the floor. Even though A2 was located in the frontcourt Team A cannot be the first to contact the ball while it is in the backcourt. 9-9-2

He wasn't really looking very closely, and it wasn't extremely obvious.

Wait, are you talking about Valentine? He was right on top of the play. I mean, no more than 4 feet from it.

Maybe he was too close. I know that has happened to me.
