Technical foul averages

I, too, give fewer whacks these days to coaches. I think it's because I have learned how to better handle coaches and my emotions. I use the stop sign when a coach starts to get out of line (didnt' know how to do this early in my career), and I also find that I go over to talk to a coach more than I used to. I think that helps keep the howling down. I probably average one "T" for every fifty games now... and it used to be a lot more than that.

The number of technicals called in a season is always an interesting topic. I was talking with a couple of other female officials last week and we all agreed that we have called fewer technicals this year. Personally, I had only called one during the high school season (delay of game - touching ball after a made basket) up until this past Friday night. The sun, moon and stars (as well as the end of the season) must have had some influence over what happend Friday night.
First technical - jvg - player slaps ball out of hands of the opponent throwing the ball in bounds.
Second technical - jvg - Coach home team - out of coaching box at the table questioning calls.
Third technical - jvb - player - unsporting behavior - after a call that I made went against him.
Fourth technical - jvb - Visiting coach - (partner gave this technical).

What a night! I also believe that there are ways to avoid technicals by managing the game. But sometimes behavior of the players and coaches warrants the technical foul.

yes, a warning had been given prior to the technical.

It does seem that as you add years to your services, that coaches do respect a veteran more. I've seen them jump on a rookie, just because, even though he had no right to jump on him. And I've seen a veteran blow a big call and the coach not say a word.

What is important that you establish yourself as a "take care of business" type. Once the word gets out that you handle coaches in a freindly, but firm manner, they will leave you alone.
