Before the game:

Coach: Ref, watch out for their point guard. He always pushes off when he dribbles.

Ref: What a coincidence. The other coach said the same thing about your point guard

HAHA...I gotta use that one!

I know this is about adult wrec league as you call it....

I love it when the coach of the 7th and 8th grade team says to me, "I didn't pay money for this league to get my kids hurt"...(usually after a mad scramble for loose ball)...

I simply tell them I understand and I didn't show up today with the intention of of letting them get hurt either...That usually quiets them down...

I like that "other coach said that too" line...

Had the "site supervisor" (usually the volunteer AD from a parochial school) come up to us during a 7th and 8th grade game and say something like that. He came up to us and said we needed to call a tighter game because the kids were getting hurt. When I asked him if he was referring to the one that got hurt in the first half, he said yes. I asked him if he saw the play, and he said no, but knew there was no foul called. I said well, kinda hard to call a foul when the girl was all by herself and started to drive into the lane and took a bad step and went down hard. He said, call something next time and walked away. By this point, partner was already on the phone calling the assignor. After the game, the supervisor came up and apologized to us, saying he got a call from the league President who got a call from the assignor. He didn't realize word could travel so fast. I remarked "the wonders of cell phone technology!" He wouldn't talk to me the rest of the day.

What's wrong with you? Don't you know that calling a foul in that case would have prevented the girl from being hurt?

Maybe not, but it sure would have made her Mom feel better.

My partner made that crack while he was dialing his phone. I managed to keep a straight face while continuing to tell this site supervisor what the hell was going on. Later I told my partner damned if I didn't bust out laughing in front of the idiot. Wish I had though, to show him what a damn fool he was!

Ball got away from her as she went down. I did make a call. Ball out of bounds, going the other way. Oh, by the way, coach, you can come out and check on her!

Might have told him " I did...I called her coach onto the floor to check on her!"

Bad idea. There might be a time and place for smart-azz remarks, but not when an injury is involved.

I was tempted to tell him a call was made. The ball went out of bounds, and was going the other way. That was my call. But I wasn't going to dignify the idiotic streak with a smart-azz remark. I was teetering between being a smart-azz official who hadn't had his Saturday morning coffee or being a smart-azz professor who gave up a few hours on a Saturday from grading papers to officiate a few games so these kids could play. That was the toughest part of the conversation!
