First games of the season.
Today I had my first three games to start my season. Whenever I hit the court in the second half of the first game I remembered why I had been trying to make myself run. All three games went smoothly and had seld help of fellow officials to tell me some things I needed to work on.
Just curious...when does everyone else start?

November 19 is the first day the Boy's can play and when my season starts. November 12 is the first day of the Girl's season. Post seasons for Boy's and Girl's Basketball start at different times so that is the reason both do not start at the same time.
Peace

Oregon doesn't start pre-season until around Thanksgiving. There are some scrimmages before that. Season starts Dec 1 as a rule, I think. But our association has it's first meeting Oct 30. First meeting, rules clinic, test before the pre-season starts. Makes it easy to get lots of folks to work the scrimmages.

Juulie,
What do you mean when you say "pre-season?" Are those games between different schools that do not count? Peace

The UIL (http://www.uil.utexas.edu/athletics/basketball/) sets out the dates practices can begin and when scrimmages against other schools can start. In Houston, we provide referees for scrimmages for a $50 fee/floor for 3 hours. So if a varsity squad is on one floor, and the JV squad is on another floor, the chapter receives $100. This money is used for training materials for the chapter.
Generally, the host school will invite 2-4 other teams to participate, and maybe they split the cost. The games are usually 15-20 minute running clock type games, and the teams rotate. The "veterans" assist the newer officials during the game with mechanics, positioning, answering questions, etc, and all referees are encouraged to help out. The officials are rotated in and out also, so you are not running 3 straight hours. (hopefully) I don't think I'm too far off if I say there are probably 10-15 schools holding scrimmages on the Saturdays before the real games start. |
