You haven't heard the official explaination from Padgett? Dave was an actual rec ball ref who said crazy stuff. In the years after Mark met Dave, Mark gave the name of Dave to anyone with whom he worked that had a quick wit.

Mark I have heard the story. That is why I say that it is a dillusion. It was funny the first 1000 time I heard it, but those comments will get you shot if you say them in the wrong circles. But I guess we all do not have the same humor. I guess that is life.
