In spite of M&M's slanderous guess, I did in fact open the beer can prior to cooking the chicken. I did not, however, drink enough of the beer prior to putting the chicken on top of the can. I won't make that mistake again.

The end result? My wife smelled it first and I went out to check, about 10 minutes after I put the meat on the grill. Smoke was billowing out, and the temperature guage showed more than 500 degrees. I made a quick assumption that opening the grill might be dangerous, so I just turned off the burners and walked away for a few minutes. When I opened the grill, the flames were still burning on the legs. Well, on what was left of the legs anyway.

I was able to salvage more than half of the meat.

Selective editing strikes again. I hope you've learned your lesson.

Good call on not opening the grill - I assume the resulting scene would've been reminscent of JR's birthday cake.

Seriously, try it again. (And this time remember to drink more!) It really does come out great.

I've had it before, and loved it. This was just my first time preparing it.

While I usually agree with the "drink more brownpop" sentiment, it ain't a necessity. Just take a churchkey and pop a few more holes in the top of the beer can. That'll git'r'done.

I'm just about JR's age and last week, I had to explain to my younger son what a "church key" was. Keep in mind that he is a college graduate with a major in opening beer bottles with a plastic lighter.

I learned a trick last week -- opening a beer bottle in a hotel room is easy if you use the handles on any drawers (clothes drawers, typically) in the room. Just stick the bottle under the handle and pull.

Church key. Indeed.

So, you're saying if I put a few more holes in the top of the can and leave the can full, it won't boil over and cause a terrific fire?

Well, I can't guarantee anything in light of your past record, but it should help.

Not sure what my past record has to do with affecting the laws of physics, but....

The universe favors those with a winning record.

Well, just give it a try and let JR know how it went ! ...Or where it went.

500 degrees ain't that hot. I normally oven fry chicken @425 for an hour.

It was actually closer to 550 if memory serves, and it was hot enough to burn the ends of the legs off. The flame lasted a while as well.

Just remember Julia Child's advice - one cup for the chicken, two cups for the chef!
