Boy's JV game. Up tempo game, a lot of pressing and quick passing. I'm trail, about 6 feet over half court, ball passed around perimeter, player in center passes a no look pass at my face (unintentionally) from about 12 feet away. I instinctively catch ball so as not to take one in the face. (I'm angled to him so I see it in my peripheral vision). I signal a violation and give ball to other team. What's the proper call?

It depends.
You are the floor at the location where you are standing. If any part of you is OOB, it is an OOB violation. If you are BC, it is a violation when A touches the ball again (if B doesn't touch it first). By rule, if you catch it inbounds, you should just drop the ball at that spot. If, however, it was a pass that was obviously going to go OOB, and there was no chance either team would get to it, I'd do what you did. Oh, yeah, watch some films of football umpires, and learn how to duck!

The official is "part of the floor." Sounds like you were in the frontcourt. In this situation, it sounds like the ball was still in the frontcourt and you could have just dropped the ball and let them have at it. At any rate, no violation had occurred. (I guess you could have given the offensive team the ball back for a throw-in, but I think I may have just dropped the ball and waited for the scrum!)
If the ball went off of you to out of bounds, then you would have had an OOB violation. If you were in the backcourt, it's only a violation if the offensive team is the first to contact the ball in the backcourt. Case 4.4.4 covers this situation. --brad |

I agree, in retrospect, I should have been more prepared to duck, however at this level I was taken by surprise, plus the pass had some heat on it so I didn't have much time. Technically it may be a double dribble since I'm part of the floor and he has both hands on the ball when he passed. Comments?

I've been surprised at how frequent the ball has almost hit me in the games I've worked. Even though I am or am almost out of bounds, I usually try to move out of the way or duck. I think if you work enough, the ball will find you....just hope it doesnt find the pills!
Unlike Jurrasic, I am still young and mobile so I'm not too worried! Larks - Please dont bet my left one again! |

A1 uses both hands in a bounce pass to A2. Do you call a double dribble when the ball touches the court? Remember, the dribble only ends when touched in both hands. If you have another dribble, then it is a double. (I.e., A1 can push the ball to the floor with both hands, then catch the ball. He can no longer dribble, but may pass/shoot/request TO.)
