Question

Here's my sitch.

Senior boys game.

We're shooting 2 free throws following a foult.

After the 2nd shot, (shot goes in), coach calls for a sub for the shooter. B1 already has possession of the ball for a throw-in. I refused the substitution, because I thought coach should have called it before the shooter had possesion of the ball for FT. Basically, I said "too late coach, next dead ball".

Was I right in this situation? NFHS rules please.

Ren

Ren,

It sounds like you are using FIBA rules. The coach in NF can't "call" for a sub. The sub must report to the scorer's table in order to be recognized. In order for a sub for the free throw shooter to be recognized, he would need to have been there before the free throw was completed.

Agreed. With the requirement that the X be at the table, we require the sub to be at the X prior to B getting the ball for the throw-in.

Question

Ok ..that's right
What about... if the sub was already at the table and it is not for the free thrower...can you still call in the sub..
so let's say that A1 is shooting and A2 wants to substitute for A3 ..can he/she come in at this time after the second shot of 2 free throws ? can B1 substitute for B2 even though team A has not have any substitutes come in ?

Yes. The ball is dead and the clock is stopped. By rule, this is an opportunity to sub.

Subs waiting

This is where conducting a good "pre-game" conference with your timer and scorer is useful. The Timer should be aware a sub is waiting to enter the game and immediately after the made basket sound the horn to acknowledge the request to substitute.

If sub was at the table - let him in.
If sub still at bench with coach yelling "sub" - hold him at table.
Do this the entire game for every sub and the coachs will get right. Follow the rule books and manuals and they will be our best friend.

Now anyother point of view.........
Was the game a blowout and the coach was trying to get his 12th man into the game?? If so, I might let the player in. Remeber the game is for the kids, not us.

don,

In a blowout where the clock is running down and the coach is trying to empty his bench for the kid who never gets to play, I have found it necessary on occasion to have to stop the game to wipe off the ball or tie a shoe string.

Those few minutes or seconds for that kid are probably more important to him/her than we realize.

So therefore, if after all these comments, I can conclude that any team may sub after the last free throw. Can you direct me to which rule this is ? And is there an example in the case book..thanks..
